About This Site

Top Camping RV Solar is written for campers, travel trailer owners and boondockers who want quiet, dependable power without running a generator all day. We review the gear that makes up a small off-grid system, from portable power stations and folding solar panel suitcases to rooftop RV kits, lithium deep-cycle batteries and MPPT charge controllers, and we explain how the pieces fit together in plain language. Every recommendation comes from gear used at real campsites across several seasons.

Electrical and Battery Safety

Solar and battery gear stores real energy, and mistakes can cause fires, burns or damage to your rig. Always fuse the positive lead as close to the battery as possible, size every wire for the current it will carry, and use the connectors and breakers the manufacturer specifies. Undersized wire and loose terminals are the most common causes of melted cables and RV fires.

Never charge a lithium battery below freezing unless it has built-in low-temperature protection, and never mix battery chemistries or old and new batteries in one bank. Keep batteries and power stations ventilated, dry and secured so they cannot slide or tip while the trailer is moving.

Solar panels produce voltage whenever light hits them, even on cloudy days, so cover them before connecting or disconnecting wiring. Do not climb onto an RV roof that is wet or not rated for foot traffic, and use proper roof sealant on every drilled hole to prevent leaks.

If you are unsure about wiring an inverter, a transfer switch or anything tied into your RV's 120V system, hire a qualified RV technician or licensed electrician. Nothing on this site replaces the installation manual for your specific product or local electrical codes.
